The Daily Ittefaq is one of the oldest previously the largest circulating daily Bengali news publication in Bangladesh. It is published from Dhaka. The Daily Ittefaq is considered as the first Bangla vernacular newspaper. It features all the standard sections of a modern daily newspaper like political news, sports, education, entertainment, and general and local news. The Daily Ittefaq is owned by Ittefaq Group of Publications Ltd. The popular English newspaper The Daily New Nation, Fashion and Entertainment Magazine Monthly Binodon and Sports Magazine Forthnighly Krirajagat are the sister concerns of Daily Ittefaq.
The Ittefaq was first published as a weekly paper on December 24, 1953. It was founded by Maulana Abdul Hamid Khan Bhasani and Yar Mohammad Khan. They are also the founders and treasurers of Bangladesh Awami League (Founded as Awami Muslim League). As both of them were politicians and busy in that time with the anti-Pakistan movement, they appointed Tofazzal Hossain, who was working in Kolkata at the time, as its editor. Before the independence of Bangladesh, Ittefaq always strongly opposed all military rule of Pakistan starting from Ayub Khan to Yahya Khan. Eventually, during this time, Ittefaq went from being weekly to becoming a daily newspaper.
Ex-Minister Anwar Hossain Monju is the current editor of the daily. He is the son of The Daily Ittefaq’s founding editor Tofazzel Hossain (Manik Mia). Following an agreement with the other shareholders of Ittefaq, Anwar Hossain assumed the position of Editor and Publisher in July 2010. Before that, there was a long feud involving ownership of The Daily Ittefaq between Anwar Hossain Monju and his brother Mainul Hossain. Mainul decided to leave the company in May 2010, as the court ordered that Anwar Hossain is the rightful editor and the publisher of the daily. Though, the longtime feuds eventually led to the near demise of it which now, in terms of circulation, lags significantly behind several newspapers in Bangladesh. However, under new management, the newspaper is currently attempting to reverse the further loss of readership.
The Daily Ittefaq publishes news mainly focused on Bangladesh. It also features International news. Its regular content features entertainment, economy, ICT, sports, lifestyle, career, educational, health and more.
