What could be the foreign policy direction of the Modi Government?

Though Narendra Modi is experienced, he is new to the management of foreign policy. In this case, there are many challenges in front of him. What would his perspective to neighboring country Pakistan, China, and Bangladesh that are the problem?

Narendra Modi will take the post of India’s 15th Prime Minister with a huge mandate.  In Delhi, the political corridors think, though he has skills in financial and administrative sector, he is practically new in foreign policy. However, before taking the oath he sent a message of friendship to the neighboring countries and many other countries. Head of the state of SAARC countries is invited to the sworn function, including Pakistan’s Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif. However, unfortunately, in the context of bilateral relations, the Pakistani High Commissioner in New Delhi said that on government's statement, India – Pakistan's peace talk would go without prerequisites. Two democratic countries will decide together which way the two neighboring countries will go to peace or conflict. Foreign policy analysts believe that the sequence of peace talks is destroyed at the beginning, which was not desired. It means Pakistan wants negotiation. In New York Departing, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh told to Pakistani Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif, it would be difficult to maintain the peace process if the terrorist attacks could not be stopped in the line of control.

The meaning of the statement by the Pakistani government is they want to disrupt this demand. The diplomatic corridors of Delhi think this warning could be a major barrier for India to continue peace talks. Besides that, they haven’t punished the criminals of the Mumbai terror attack.

The analysts do not seem to be any difference in India’s historical bonding with Bangladesh. Foreign policy experts say – because it’s a continuous issue. On the other hand, it is believed that if the Modi government remains pressure free from the associated parties, they could take positive steps to implement the long-pending land boundary agreement and the sharing of Teesta River. It is doubted how much Modi will consider Mamta’s objection because the relation between Mamta Banerjee is not valid. Especially considering the larger interest of the country.

In foreign policy, the central government takes the final decision. Bangladeshi Muslim infiltration issue has made generated controversy, Delhi diplomatic corridors think it is much exaggerated. Note that, Mamata- Modi's bitterness reached the stage that the various state governments and groups congratulated Modi. However, Mamata didn’t, neither for the sake of courtesy. India's old neighbor and Geopolitical competitor China welcomed Modi's success. China’s leaders think that the real key to Modi’s victory is his economic reform and development.

So Modi’s primary priority should be the internal business redevelopment and the election commitment to implement quickly. Modi would not want to go to clashes with China. The observers of India’s China policy think; Modi will not make any dramatic change to China's policy overnight. He might the status quo in business cooperation with China. China also will not dare to conflict with India. Because China is now tensed about the East and South China Sea where on one side is Japan and on other, side is Vietnam and the Philippines.

Modi has a significant challenge on foreign policy regarding Afghanistan. U.S. and NATO forces have begun to leave Afghanistan. A political and military emptiness has created. That happened in -80s when the former Soviet troops are leaving Afghanistan.  To tackle the combatant Taliban insurgents Abdullah going to be the President of the newly elected government. For social – economic development in Afghanistan, the new government will want to keep a good relationship with India.

On the other hand, Obama's administration welcomed Modi as Prime Minister. Obama and his Secretary of State, John Kerry greeted Modi and also invited him to visit the U.S.A. over a phone. Expressed interest in a new equation to bilateral relations. Because, in today's world, India and the United States are not only essential to each other, it is complimentary.
