The Daily Prothom Alo

The Daily Prothom Alo is the most popular Daily Newspaper in Bangladesh. It published from Dhaka in the Bengali language. Prothom Alo has a circulation of nearly half a million copies that makes it the highest circulated newspaper in Bangladesh and more than any other newspaper published in the Bengali Language. Daily Prothom Alo also has two online versions, prothom-alo[dot]com and eprothom-alo[dot]com, which have the same popularity as its print version. The prothom-alo[dot]com is the highest viewed News site in Bangladesh, according to Alexa. It is also the 6th most viewed website and most viewed Bangladeshi Website in Bangladesh.



Prothom Alo was first published on 4th November 1998. Matiur Rahman has been the editor of the newspaper since its founding. He received the Ramon Magsaysay Foundation Award for Journalism, Literature, and Creative Communication Arts in 2005. Mahfuz Anam, the editor of The Daily Star was its publisher from its beginning till 2008. Since then Matiur Rahman is performing as an editor and publisher both. Prothom Alo is a concern of the Transcom Group. Popular Bangla newspaper The Daily Star and the Weekly 2000 are sister concern of The Daily Prothom Alo.

Some notable writers and columnists regularly write columns for Prothom Alo. Among them, most famous are writer Muhammed Jafar Iqbal and Anisul Hoque. Humayun Ahmed also used to write occasion columns for Protom Alo during his lifetime. Other regular columnists include Syed Manzoorul Islam, ABM Musa, Syed Abul Maqsud, Abul Momen, Abul Hayat, and Abu Ahmed.

Regular sections of Prothom Alo includes News, Shompadokiyo (Editorial), Bishal Bangla (Regional News), Shara Bishsho (World News), Kheladhula (Sports News), Binodon (Entertainment), Porashona (Education), Computer Protidin (ICT News), Chithipotro (Letters from readers). It has weekly features, Saturday a Chutir Dina, Sunday a Shopno Niyea and a Bondhushovaa, Monday a Rosh+Aloa, Tuesday a Nokshaa, Wednesday an Aduana, Thursday an Anondoa and Friday an Onno Alcoa, a Shamoyikia, a Gollachuta and a Projonmo Dot Coma€.

Some sections, such as an Alokito Chottograma, are only found in the editions of the paper distributed in the Chittagong Area and not in the national or Dhaka editions. As like an Alokito Chottograma for Chittagong, readers of Dhaka get a special edition called a Dhakai Thakia, readers of Sylhet get an Alokito Sylheta North Bengal readers to get an Alokito Uttora and readers in Southern districts get an Alokito Dakshina.
