Compensation for the Rana Plaza will be given in the last week of June

The committee decided that the compensation of the victim workers of Rana Plaza collapsed in Bangladesh will be given in the last week of June.They also said that the compensation would be given step by step.

Though the fund opened for the compensation of the workers by ILO named ‘Rana Plaza Donor trust Fund’ the required money is not deposited yet.

Labor leaders said that the efforts to arrange the number of compensations from the foreign buyers have been continued.  But as much fund was required before that in which basis, the payment will be given?

The fund supervised by the Government and ILO expected a target of the fund of 40 million dollars, but 19 million dollars so far have been submitted.

The involved persons said, however; they are going to pay the compensation to this fund from the last week of the next month.  The whole money of compensation will be given to the workers and to ensure that the work will be done step by step.
How will the number of compensations be paid?

From last March, the registration started by the family members of dying worker or injured on that occurrence to give compensation under Rana Plaza Donor Trust, until now, 1200 people have registered.

In the middle of June, the registration will stop and then after verifying the number of compensations will be set. This estimate is based on what?

Chief executive of Bangladesh Institute of Labor Studies exhibitionism Syed Sultan Uddin Ahmed said, “According to the ILO convention 121 the compensation will be set according to estimating the damage of the dependents. Parents, brother, children, husband, and wife so long depending on the income of workers until a certain age the compensation will be given.”

However, Mr. Ahmed said, the number of compensations to injured workers is more than others.

He said, “When it comes the dependent's question is always more than the victim. Especially who are unable to work anymore? Because he also becomes dependent as well as his family. So the compensation will be more than the victim’s family.”

After the Rana Plaza incident, the topic worker's compensation comes up. The affected workers received some financial support after that. In the context, what are the affected workers thinking about their compensation?

Ayesha Akhtar worked in New Star Garments on the seventh floor of Rana Plaza; she got a serious injury in hand and leg in an accident and now spends her time in a home. She has six family members, including parents, brothers, and sisters.

Ayesha Akhtar thinks something could have been made if she gets the full compensation.

She told the BBC, “I don’t know how much we will get, if we get the budgeted amount in one time we could do something. They give the money in installments; we couldn’t do anything. We ran our family by getting a salary in the last of the month. It’s very difficult for me to sit wakes' in the home. Why are they not giving our Money? Why they are taking so much time?”

Labor leaders said; it is very frustrating that they are unable to deposit the required amount in the fund, and they have expressed dissent on the issue of giving the money step by step.

Industrial Bangladesh representative Roy Ramesh Chandra says may be the compensation giving can be done gradually, but will have to give attention to the collection of money as well. It could not bring more compensation the worker will be pleased with the money we have this thinking shouldn’t be brought in mind. For the required fund, we will apply to the European Union, Canada and U.S.A.”

The concerned thinks that its need to continue our efforts to collect the amount from the foreign buyers for the fair compensation of victim workers.
